Venezuela denounces Trump's order for ship blockade as 'warmongering threats'

Image
S President Donald Trump has ordered "a total and complete" blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela - a move denounced by Caracas as " warmongering threats ". Trump wrote that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's government had been designated a foreign terrorist organisation ( FTO ), which had also engaged in "Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking". His remarks come after the US seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela last week, a significant action in light of the South American nation's reliance on oil. The US has also recently conducted deadly strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug-smuggling boats, and has significantly built up its naval presence nearby. Trump's post did not give further detail of how the wide-ranging blockade on sanctioned oil tankers would be enforced. As of last week, more than 30 of the 80 ships in Venezuelan waters or approaching the country were under US sanctions, according to d...

Cristiano Ronaldo in the New Media Ecosystem

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo is the best-known, best-followed, best-paid and possibly just best football player in the world. But is his unprecedented success due entirely to his athletic prowess, or is it because he has adapted perfectly to the new media ecosystem that demands total visibility?   In February 2025, during a Spanish television interview, Cristiano Ronaldo declared, “I’m t he best player in football history . I haven’t seen anyone better than me.” Was this a gauche, egotistical indiscretion or the knowing remark of a consummate self-publicist with brilliant intuition for grabbing the world’s attention? Ronaldo is an athlete  par excellence , and his prodigious skills are the reason we first knew of him. But there have been other exceptional football players, all of whom distinguished themselves as the world’s best. Pelé in the 1960s, Johan Cruyff in the 1970s, Diego Maradona in the 1980s, Lionel Messi in the 2010s: Each redefined what seemed possible in their er...

E.U. hits Musk’s X with $140 million fine, says it broke hate speech and misinformation rules

Image
The European Commission said on Friday it was fining Elon Musk’s social media app X with the equivalent of $140 million, saying that it had breached the bloc’s digital rulebook — a move that will likely draw the ire of the American government . The European Commission alleged that X violated the Digital Services Act, a sweeping 2022 law that requires internet companies to aggressively combat hate speech and misinformation. The law — one of the most far-reaching attempts to fight problematic material online — mandates that companies set up policies and procedures to remove posts deemed illegal by countries within the 27-country union . The penalty drew swift condemnation from  Vice President JD Vance  even before the European Commission announced it. “Rumors swirling that the E.U. commission will fine X hundreds of millions of dollars for not engaging in censorship. The EU should be supporting free speech not attacking American companies over ga...

Image
Root’s first hundred in Australia helped England to 334 all out as the hosts look to hit back early on through Head and Weatherald England  have a slight advantage in the second Ashes Test match as a fabulous 138* from Joe Root  at the Gabba steered the tourists to 334 all out in the first innings. Root had never scored a hundred in  Australia  before yesterday’s heroics rescued England from the terrible position of 5-2 after Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were dismissed early on. He was the anchor for England’s innings with contributions also coming from Zak Crawley (76), Harry Brook (31) and Jofra Archer (38). The latter came as part of an exciting and bombastic 10th wicket stand with Root that brought 70 runs and took the visitors to the close of play, though the partnership only lasted another two overs on Friday after a superb catch from Marnus Labuschagne . England’s bowling unit, led by Archer and Gus Atkinson, will look to Mitchell ...
